Each class begins with a standing meditation called "Hug a Tree". It has many names across the world. The basic posture helps us to learn how to align the body. Also we learn to be quiet and still. We seek to find stillness in motion. As we stand our "root" grows. The root refers to our ability to connect to the ground. We sink our chi. If we do not want to move we can stay rooted in one spot. Progress leads to the ability to use the ground to build energy. When we combine the root with stillness , proper posture we have a beginning. We can use these tools to heal, to do the form and to defend ourselves.
